2008 Mini Cleanup 2 – Lucerne Valley, CA – 05/25/2008
Our second cleanup of the 2008 Mini Cleanup series took place at the end of Bessemer Mine Road and Soggy Dry Lake in Lucerne Valley. This was our first cleanup in this area and we weren’t completely sure what to expect. Because of it’s isolated location, we were confident that there would be less large refuse, unlike Barstow which is right off a major freeway.
Sure enough, the bulk of the work involved picking up stray trash stuck in the bushes near the restroom. BLM workers stated that this was not uncommon because campers would often leave their trashbags near the restrooms on their way out. These trashbags were easy prey for scavenging birds who would rip them open, thus causing the contents to be strewn across the desert by the wind.
Moral of the story? Pack it in, pack it out!
Special thanks again to Rose at the BLM for arranging the trash disposal as well as big thanks to BLM staff members John and Steve for their help in the cleanup effort.
